Is it possible to be free from anger in the material world? Not quite. Then, is it possible to be angry but not ruin your peace of mind? A big YES. To quote Om Swami, the realized Himalayan Monk and my Spiritual Master, “Anger remains the greatest test of one’s spiritual evolution, patience and wisdom.” How true is that! But having said that it is also true that anger is one of the strongest tendencies of the mind. Even the beings with years and years of penance and meditation find it hard to stay free from anger. Such is the hold of this tendency on the mind. However, it is a tendency meaning an inclination towards a particular characteristic or type of behaviour. The mind can be trained to look at this tendency in depth and then choose the appropriate response. Anger is always an action. Actions can be chosen mindfully. In professional and personal life it becomes imperative at times to express one’s displeasure over certain things. But how is one doing that is totally in one’s hands. Is one snapping right away with hurtful words the moment something unpleasant happens or is one taking a breather and then choosing to express anger with carefully selected words from the dictionary of the mind? This is all that makes the difference.

It is very important to understand your anger before you get on to deal with it. If you look at it you will find anger has a great deal to do with expectations. Expectations from those working under you, expectations from your child, from your partner, from your parents, expectations even from your domestic help. We are always living in a web of expectations. We feel we have a right towards such and such kind of outcome from all those around us. When they fail to give us such and such outcome anger streams. We have all justifications to anger in our quiver ready to be hurled at whoever asks us the reason for our anger. When we face the anger streaming from someone else’s expectation we suddenly become the victim. In that case too we have a separate set of justifications ready with us. As long as there are expectations it will be difficult, if not impossible, to stay free from anger. Does it mean one should not expect? Well, let us not go into what one should or should not but choosing one’s response mindfully whenever one is having temper tantrums is always something that will not cost one’s peace of mind. Respond, not react. That is the key.

Let us have a look at some classic quotes on anger to comprehend it better

1. “Anybody can become angry – that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way – that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.”

-Aristotle

2. “Anger is a valid emotion. It’s only bad when it takes control and makes you do things you don’t want to do.”

-Ellen Hopkins

3. “Anger expressed in a healthy and positive way means that we channel emotional anger towards resolution not attack.”

-Byron R. Pulsifer

4. “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

-Mark Twain

5. “You shouldn’t give circumstances the power to rouse anger, for they don’t care at all.”

-Marcus Aurelius

6. “Do not do to others what angers you if done to you by others.”

-Socrates

7. “Responding to a trying situation with patience and tolerance rather than reacting with anger and hatred involves active restraint, which arises from a strong, self-disciplined mind.”

-Dalai Lama

8. “The best fighter is never angry.”

-Lao Tzu

9. “A quick temper will make a fool of you soon enough.”

Bruce Lee

10. “See, the question of being angry with somebody does not arise. You are not angry with anybody, you are just angry. Your anger has nothing to do with somebody else. It’s about you. Whether you are angry at a rock, God, your Guru, or whatever – anger is simply anger. It has got nothing to do with anybody or anything.”

-Sadhguru

Here is an enthralling article by Om Swami that talks about the eight stages or layers of anger and compares anger with an onion. Read on to see how the layers can be removed. Have a look and know your anger better.

On Monday the 10th of August, 2020 the creative head of my company and her family met an immense loss when her father passed away. The loss got incredibly magnified as some 6 years back her mother had also gone into the realm of another world. I received the news through a WhatsApp message seeing which I called her to express my condolence. She was totally shaken and in a pool of tears. I had absolutely no idea what to say. Words faltered me. I so wished to somehow make her feel a little OK but failed to do so. I prayed for the departed soul and for the bereaved family and the whole day dwelt on DEATH.

Almost all of us must have thought about it, more or less. But as soon as the thought comes to us normally we try to put it aside. We don’t wish to think deep over it. Maybe yes, maybe no! But we fail to see when is it that death is not happening? Isn’t it happening right from the moment we are born? Every second we are nearing it. Just getting closer to it. It is a truth we cannot ignore even if we don’t wish to think about it. Our fear of death and losing everything dear to us is so strong that we simply don’t wish to ponder over it. Yet no matter how hard we try death will get us one day. It always gets everyone. Not sooner, not later, just at the time of it. So is death truly to be feared? Well, let us give our perspective a shift. What if I say death is always close to us and not a distant thing? With every new breath life is happening and with every breathe out death. One of the reasons why almost all Realized Masters have highlighted the importance of conscious and mindful breathing.

Let us look at death closely through these timeless quotes –

1. “If death meant just leaving the stage long enough to change costume and come back as a new character, would you slow down? Or speed up?”

– Chuck Palahniuk

2. “Fear of death is ridiculous, because as long as you are not dead you are alive, and when you are dead there is nothing more to worry about!”

– Paramahansa Yogananda

3. “If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them.”

—James O’Barr

4. “Tell your friend that in his death, a part of you dies and goes with him. Wherever he goes, you also go. He will not be alone.”

– Jiddu Krishnamurti

5. “Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides”.

– Lao Tzu

6. “If you don’t know how to die, don’t worry; Nature will tell you what to do on the spot, fully and adequately. She will do this job perfectly for you; don’t bother your head about it.”

– Montaigne

7. “Death is a challenge. It tells us not to waste time… It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other”.

– Leo Buscaglia

8. “People fear death even more than pain. It’s strange that they fear death. Life hurts a lot more than death. At the point of death, the pain is over.

– Jim Morrison

9. “One clings to life although there is nothing to be called life; another clings to death although there is nothing to be called death. In reality, there is nothing to be born; consequently, there is nothing to perish.”

– Buddha

10. “Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.”

– Henry Scott Holland

11. “Death is the dropping of the flower that the fruit may swell.”

– Henry Ward Beecher

12. “What is lovely never dies, but passes into other loveliness.”

– Thomas Bailey

13. “Man cannot possess anything as long as he fears death. But to him who does not fear it, everything belongs.”

– Leo Tolstoy

14. “The only reason why people have such a fear of death is they know nothing beyond the body.”

– Sadhguru

15. “Nothing is dying, nothing is taking rebirth. Don’t let the illusion fool you. Matter is merely being transformed. Water evaporates, and it rains back down again. Everything in the play of nature remains part of the game — eternally.”

– Om Swami

Life exists. So does death. And it is good that is the way it is. Think of a life which has no end. How would it look like to see every dear thing pass on in front of one’s eyes and one is just living on and on. Death is the truth. Life is a mystery. Take life gracefully. Take death gracefully. We will die to the fullest. So why not live life to the fullest? Do not fear death. Everything passes. The fear shall pass. We too shall pass!

Human mind is a fabulous tool handed over to us to accomplish whatever we wish to. The power of the human mind is unparalleled and incredible. It has been seen those who are able to understand their mind are better able to handle every situation no matter how challenging it may seem. To quote Eckhart Tolle “All problems are illusions of the mind”. Does that mean there are no problems for those who have a comprehension of their minds? Is life all hunky dory for them? Contrary to this, it simply means that they know how to use the mind to the best of its ability to come out of any catch 22 situation. Well mostly!

Words like anxiety, depression and restlessness have taken a centre stage these days. Almost every other person feels these bouts of anxiety, depression, fear and rage almost always. Some days are all anxious, some others are all blue and gloomy while some are all mixed up together. The truth, however, is these are just instances where the mind has taken charge over the master and has become a Frankestein Monster. It has become all restless and seems totally out of control. Is there a way to calm a restless mind? Well, the good news is there are many ways it can be done. And like Rome was not built in a day, these ways also work when they are consciously practised and cultivated as a part of one’s programming. But they surely work. Read on further some of the ways to calm a restless mind.

1. Acceptance

Acceptance is the key to proceed on the path of having a better comprehension of the mind. When one feels sad or fearful or anxious or restless, one needs to accept that it is not me but it is my mind that is sad or fearful or restless at this moment. This acceptance needs to be there before one can take the next step about fixing the error. Accept that something has gone haywire with mind, the tool, and then get your hands on the tool box.

2. Chant

Why chant is coming right after acceptance is for a reason. Usually when the mind is restless the breath is at a faster pace. To calm the pace just by focusing on the breath may seem tough initially. Chanting is something which shifts your focus and also helps in calming the breath.

Mantras, if chanted regularly, have sonic vibrations which can be immensely beneficial for the mind. Pick any mantra. Try picking a smaller one, example Ram. Chant mentally or by speaking and match the speed of the chanting with the level of restlessness in the mind. More the restlessness faster the speed. You will observe soon enough the breath will become calmer and the mind will quieten. Try it out.

3. Focus on your Breath

This too has almost an instant effect on calming a restless mind provided it is done mindfully. It is a very simple practice to be cultivated into a habit with favourable influence on the mind. So, here is how you do it.

When your mind feels restless just fish out a quiet place and sit comfortably. Start focusing on your breath with slow inhalation and exhalation. While inhaling mentally count from 1 to 6. Then hold the breath for 3 counts. While exhaling again mentally count from 1 to 6 and then hold for 3 counts before taking the next breath. You will observe the difference in the state of your mind within minutes. See for yourself.

4. Hop, Skip or Run

For those who find it hard to slow down the mind or focus on any mantra or breath to begin with, try this option out. Just jump on a treadmill or grab a skipping rope and just do it. If you don’t have either just search for some exercises on YouTube. There are plenty of them. 5 minutes of extensive physical activity will exhaust not only you but your jumping mind too will become slow. Just sweat the restlessness out of your system. This may not work if you are at your workplace but then that is the precise reason why more than one way are coming across your way.

5. Listen to Music

Music again works on the science of sound and can assist you in taming your mind. There is plenty of relaxing and soothing music available on YouTube and apps like Spotify. If soft music is not your cup of coffee then listen to the music you prefer. It has a miraculous effect in shifting the attention no matter how hard the notorious mind tries to ignore it. Mind starts with M. Well, so do Music and Miracle!

6. Watch a Show

This one totally depends on an individual choice. Some may prefer thriller against some who like comedy. Mine is mystery for instance. Watching a show of a particular genre has its own effects on the mind. Having said that it has been said time and again that laughter is the best medicine. If you are not able to figure out what will calm your mind, go for comedy. Have you ever wondered when you are in a bout of a hearty laugh your mind is absolutely thoughtless? Try reflecting on this when you laugh again. I bet you will forget because the mind will be devoid of any thought. That is the power of laughter. Go for it!

7. Meditate Mindfully

Meditation is one word that has become a fad in these times. There mustn’t be a soul unaware of this word. One of the best and timeless ways to get to the root of your mind is meditation. But the point is how to go about it so that it helps in reining the mind? The key is to do it mindfully. But what does that mean? Well the answers to this question lies in the Black Lotus App. This app is the most wonderful app with plenty of meditations and chanting that have been curated to understand the mind deeply. It is available both on Play-store and iOS and give you instant solution for your restless mind no matter where you are. Being an app it stays with you always in this era of technology. Here is the link in case you wish to download it.

You are the ONE who has the mind and not the other way round. This is the thing you have to keep in mind always. Don’t let the monkey mind become a master. Remember who is the tool and who is the Master!

Desire is one of the tendencies of the mind that every human is familiar with. Every human life runs through a plethora of fulfilled and unfulfilled desires. Om Swami, a Himalayan mystic, a realised master and an author of several bestsellers like ‘A Million Thoughts’ and ‘Mind Full to Mindful, very simply puts “When we fail to abandon our thoughts, they assume different forms. They can become desires, expectations or emotions.” He also says further “The kingdom of consciousness is under siege by the desires of our mind.” This means the genesis of all desires is in the mind.

Let us have a look at these quotes to better help understand desire, the mother of all tendencies.

1. If desire is a conscious process, there is no problem. But now that you have lost your awareness and it has become a compulsion, you are a slave to your desire

– Sadhguru

2. So long as there is desire or want, it is a sure sign that there is imperfection. A perfect, free being cannot have any desire.

Vivekananda

3. To support mother and father, to cherish wife and child and to have a simple livelihood; this is the good luck.

– Buddha

4. All cravings are the mind seeking salvation or fulfillment in external things and in the future as a substitute for the joy of Being.

Eckhard Tolle

5. Wealth and rank are what men desire, but unless they be obtained the right way they may not be possessed.

Confucius

6. It is the nature of desire not to be satisfied, and most men live only for the gratification of it.

Aristotle

7. Learning is like a cow of desire. It, like her, yields in all seasons. Like a mother it feeds you on your journey. Therefore learning is a hidden treasure.

Chanakya

8. Let your desires be ruled by reason.

Cicero

9. Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat.

Socrates

10. Desires are only the lack of something: and those who have the greatest desires are in a worse condition than those who have none, or very slight ones.

Plato

The idea is not to get preachy. The idea is to understand true nature of desire so that one is better able to deal with them. After all the key is to lead a peaceful life and if desires only rob one of mental peace, they need to be re-looked at.

The importance of being in the moment, living in the moment has been emphasized enough if one wishes to live a life meaningfully & mindfully. Every moment has immense power to make one aware of one’s true potential. Only if one tries to be in the moment. Through the following poem one has tried to give words to the beauty of living in the moment.

JUST A MOMENT!

A moment is all you need
to tell someone you care
to say you’ll be there
to let your heart bleed
to show you love indeed

A moment is all you need
to bear all the pain
to stand tough in rain
to let the tears flow
to let the sorrow go

A moment is all you need
to break free and fly
to touch the mighty sky
to set things straight
to make your own fate

A moment is all you need
to be the invincible
to do the impossible
to let happiness thrive
to say you’re still alive
Coz it’s a moment and just one
That can make things happen!!!
